The Habit Is the Result

You don't get the outcome and then keep the habit. The habit, repeated, is the outcome.

We tend to think of habits as the means and the result as the prize at the end — do the thing long enough and you'll arrive somewhere. I'd flip it. With health, the habit isn't the path to the result. Repeated, the habit is the result.

Why the daily thing is the whole thing

Your gut bacteria respond to what you feed them today. Your energy responds to the meals you actually ate this week. There's no finish line where you get to stop and keep the benefit anyway — the benefit is the pattern, ongoing. That sounds like bad news, but it's the opposite: it means you don't have to be perfect or heroic. You just have to be consistent.

A small thing done most days beats a big thing done once. Always has.

How to make one automatic

The trick to a daily habit is removing the decisions. Keep the noodles where you'll see them. Attach the bowl to a meal you already eat — lunch, most days. Make it two minutes so there's no friction to talk yourself out of. When a good choice stops requiring a decision, it stops requiring willpower, and that's when it lasts.

What to do this week

Don't aim for a transformation. Aim for a bowl you don't have to think about. One a day, most days. Do that, and you're not working toward the result — you're already living it.

From Dr. Carp

One mechanism at a time.

A few times a month I explain one mechanism — why soluble fiber feeds the bacteria in your gut, why protein steadies blood sugar, why morning light shows up in how you sleep that night. Always the same shape: what happens, and the reason why.
