Best Foods to Eat for Staying Warm in Winter

You’re eating what you think are healthy foods: salads, fruit and juice smoothies, raw vegetables, fruits and yogurt. But during periods of cold weather, these foods may not be the best to eat for staying warm in winter.

You can also replace potatoes or noodles with Miracle Noodle and Miracle Rice to use in stews. Certain spices like ginger and garlic help to warm up the blood, as well as boost immunity.


If you’re a meat eater, perhaps you think chicken and turkey is healthier than red meat. In traditional chinese medicine theory, white meats like chicken and turkey have a cooling effect on blood circulation whereas red meat like lamb and beef are warming.


Not all meats are created equal. The healthiest red meats come from small farms that produce grass-fed, pasture-raised animals. Pasture-raised organic, grass-fed meat is not only warming for the body, at least according to Chinese medicinal philosophy, it is much richer in Omega-3 essentially fatty acids than grain-fed, factory-farmed meat.

For breakfast, try toasting and/or baking healthy bread such as real, old-world style dark rye or pumpernickel bread. Spread with butter or almond butter. Whole, organic scrambled eggs are also nutritious and warming for the body. Don’t be afraid to eat the yolk as most of the vitamins and minerals are contained within.


Although the foods mentioned at the very beginning--salads, raw veggies, fruits, yogurt, smoothies--are generally regarded as healthy, they are not warming for the body.


Think about how a salad is made, typically prepared within minutes after removing cold produce from the fridge. Same goes for fruit and raw veggies and yogurt. If you’re going to eat any of these foods on a frigid winter’s day, remove them from the fridge for at least a couple hours before eating. Unless you are storing these foods in a sauna, during the winter, they will not easily spoil if left out on the kitchen counter.


An obvious food to warm the body is soup. If you’re going to eat lentil soup or some variety that calls for beans, to prevent gas and bloating, use beans that have been soaked in room temperature water for 12 hours.
