5 Tips For Paleo Dieters Who Miss Carbs

These are the 5 tips by Jonathan Carp, MD for paleo dieters who dearly miss carbs and sugars but still want the tremendous benefits and positive changes of following a paleo diet correctly and consistently.
1. Snack smart - stick to healthy snacks like a handful of raw nuts and hydrate aggressively. Herbal teas during the day can satisfy our palate since most of us have an addiction to tasting something every few hours. Embrace veggies and chew slowly, use snacking time to train your palate to appreciate raw veggies. It takes about 3 weeks to retrain your palate - so be patient!!.
2. Make sure you don’t only eat meats. I see this with patients and clients a lot who start any new low-carb diet – they default too much onto meats in order to satisfy their hunger and have energy during the day. Organic, grass-finished meats are great and paleo, but make sure you also have other foods on your plate. Preferably foods, which are filling and high-fiber such as vegetables (spinach, kale, broccoli) or other more rare plant foods you may have never heard of (more on those later…)
3. Your environment mostly dictates your influences and behavior. Make sure you have no sugary snacks in your cupboard or any other bad foods. That will sap your willpower because you have to resist them (if the bad foods are not anywhere close to you, you don’t have to resist them which will save you tremendous amounts of willpower).
4. Replace ordinary cheat foods such as noodles, pasta, spaghetti, pizza and pudding just to name a few, with what I call ‘transitional foods’. Transitional foods are foods and dishes that are the same or similar (when it comes to taste and texture) than ordinary cheat foods but are packed with healthy ingredients and high in fiber. An example here would be replacing ordinary spaghetti with Miracle Instant Spaghetti. But more on that later...
5. Learn a handful of quick and simple recipes that can bring back the satisfaction and taste of your favorite dishes that you’ve been missing. If it takes you 2-3 minutes to create a quick satisfying meal, the bad cheat-foods will tempt you less. The recipes you learn will be the aces in your sleeve when a food craving is trying to overcome you.

The biggest mistake people make when starting or trying to stick to a paleo diet is going cold turkey. The switch from SAD (standard American diet) to a happy, healthy, weight-loss promoting paleo diet most likely won’t happen within 24 hours. You need the right environment with the right foods that support you in making that switch and transition.
“There is this unrealistic ideal out there being pushed by health gurus and fitness trainers that we need to eat perfectly all the time and that we should be able to have an iron-will and never eat foods we like.
